Project TITLE: Youth Media Forum, Level UP
Aim:
Our main aim was to create a space for friendly and productive communication between youth, to enable them with skills of media literacy, critical assessment and project management, to introduce them to all activities that happen in the regions and NGOs/companies in charge of those activities, to stimulate their interest in getting involved. All the same we tried to show to Tallinn residents from other regions that Lasnamäe truly is a vibrant and rapidly developing region, which we introduced with help from Media and professionals in field of Media and increased involvement of the youth to create several visible products to be later disseminated all around Tallinn and beyond. During the process of creating Media products, we focused a lot on the MEDIA POWER, as youth have nowadays experience of the COVID 19 global crises and they used real examples, how Media effect on people. We have learnt how to use Media as an instrument, which helped youth to show problems among them in the region Lasnamae.
During the project were created 7 ideas and started 7 Media visual projects. Each project was supported by a mentor and received an award from the Media expert.
PROBLEM, HOW WAS created an idea:
Lasnamäe district of Tallinn has a lot of stereotypes attached to it, according to the general population of Tallinn. It is thought to be the least developed region, boring and grey, a kind of Russian ghetto where nobody at all speaks Estonian nor wants to learn it. It is often assumed that there is nothing to do in this region and living there is unsafe due to the high proportion of petty crimes and alcohol consumption. The youth of the region is seen as lacking initiative, not interested in self-development and generally not bothered in the situation of the region, community and city. We want to show that these stereotypes are myths rather than reality, to get the information to youth about all activities happening in the district and the organizations that provide these activities, as well as to create a Media product (prototype) about vibrant and developing activities happening in Lasnamäe to later disseminate among residents of other Tallinn regions.
Data sources and proof are based on the previous experience, as this project is the second part of what we started managed on the previous year. Our experience answered to us that there is a big need among youth to discuss about problems in Lasnamae between each other and learn Media as an very powerful instrument, which can them in their ideas realisation and will pay attention of the society from different regions of Tallinn on their problem. We made analysis of the from the previous experience and ready to improve this Youth Media Forum content according to the youth feedback and all trainers, experts and partners, who were belonged to the process and involved before. Especially now, during the COVID 19 crises we need to pay big attention on the critical thinking and how youth can later live with this instrument after GLOBAL isolation. Appeared new reality, where youth need a big support and this type of FORUM, will have Level up stage, where we focus on the most actual needs from youth and how Media as an instrument can be used, meaning of its power.
